National Association of Women in Construction

History of the National Association of Women in Construction
NAWIC was founded in the United States over 50 years ago, and currently has a membership of nearly 6,000 women across the globe

On 22 February 2002 Building Magazine published a letter from Lorraine Elliot, to gauge the level of interest within the construction industry of setting up an organisation representing women in construction in the UK.  The response to this letter was off the scale of what Lorraine ever expected.

By March of the same year she was inundated with letters and emails from women who were excited by the prospect of a new exciting possibility.  An inaugural meeting was held in London on 22 March 2002 and by May the Press Release went out that the organisation the National Association of Women in Construction was officially launched, with Lorraine Elliot as Chair.

Our first website was launched in July the same year.  Since then we as an organisation have had some personnel changes namely the appointment of our new Chair Katrina Dowding in November 2005 and our National Treasurer Wendy Lintin.

Our regions have continued to go from strength to strength and we currently have members in London and the South East, the Midlands, North West England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and  the South West.

We have forged links with a number of like minded organisations over the years, including Women in Property (WiP), Women in Manual Trades (WiMT), Women in Architecture and Chicks with Bricks.  We are also engaged with the various construction institutions, RICS, CIOB, CiTB on a regional and national basis.
