| NAWIC Annual General Meeting 24 November 2004 |
|
In February 2002 Lorraine Elliott responded to an article in Building magazine calling for likeminded women to contact her with a view to set up a group for women in construction. The response to the magazine was outstanding and Lorraine began to correspond with the women directly. The result was that in October 2002 the National Association of Women in Construction was officially launched. In the last 2 years NAWIC has gone from strength to strength under the Chairmanship of Lorraine Elliot. The national committee has expanded and extreme efforts have been made to get the voice of NAWIC and thus all women in construction heard. We have hosted a national summer party and our local regions go from strength to strength. We as a committee have worked hard to bring the organisation to where it is today considering we are all volunteering our time between our busy day jobs! We have our own website, which is being developed increasingly with time and our newsletter is an informative insight into the construction industry through a woman's pair of eyes. Unfortunately we have had our set backs. Our first annual conference and AGM had to be cancelled due to lack of intake from our members. This was largely due to, not a lack of commitment from our women, but a reluctance from their employers to release them for the day. The irony being that it is our organisation, which is trying to overcome these attitudes, should be the one falling foul of them. However, now is the time to look forward to our future. Lorraine Elliot has taken the decision to step down as Chairman. She has held the position for two years and feels that it is time to pass on the helm. Indeed as the majority of the committee has held their positions since NAWIC's inception two years ago it is now the time to ask for nominees for positions and invite voting for positions currently held. Since we are currently looking forward to our rearranged AGM we feel this would be the right time to elect/re-elect our committee for 2005. We are planning to hold our AGM at the offices of Gateley Wareing, Birmingham City Centre on the evening of 24 November 2004.
