The lunch was held at the lovely Piccolino resturant in Brindley Place, situated in the centre of Birmingham and was hosted by Suzanne Verdee from BBC Midlands today. The event was held in order to raise money for the Birmingham Crisis Centre, a safe haven for victims of domestic violence. • Turning Contacts into Clients

23 February 2011 In October 2010 the Midlands branch of NAWIC introduced its members and supporters to some of the skills needed to "work a room" and develop a network of business contacts. Having begun to build a network you quickly realise that there is little point in putting time and effort into meeting lots of new and exciting people if no business ever develops from those relationships. One of the most important processes that business developers undertake is that of turning a contact into a client. The process consists of a series of steps and key milestones that need to be reached in order to achieve this goal. Great business developers are made, not born. However, NAWIC takes the view that a bit of guidance in developing the right skills can go a long way. This event featured a talk providing a st of tools and details of techniques that can be employed during the conversion process. The event gave attendees a clear understanding of the steps involved to more effectively convert their contacts into clients. Mike Ames is a Business Development Coach with a very successful track record of working with professional firms who want to increase sales but have a limited budget, resources and time. Michael very kindly delivered the talk. The session generated a lively debate about the use of social network sites as a tool for business development.

  • Construction Contracts Bill

17 February 2011 2011 kicked off in Ireland with a fantastic night hosted by Arthur Cox at their offices in Dublin. The Construction Contracts Bill if enacted will see adjudication introduced for the first time to construction disputes in Ireland. This will bring enormous change to the landscape of construction disputes in Ireland. We were delighted that Senator Fergal Quinn, who initiated this legislation by way of a private members bill in the Seanad presented to us outlining the history of this bill and the prospects of its enactement into Irish law. Fionuala McCredie, a barrister in Keating Chambers in London then gave us an insight into the experience of adjudication in the UK since its introduction there in 1998. Finally Don O Sullivan of the CIF gave us an insight into the thinking within the CIF of the introduction of adjudication into Ireland. Our thanks to Arthur Cox for a most interesting presentation and for the generous wine and finger food reception which followed.

  • 2010 Christmas Drinks

19 December 2010 For a whole lot of reasons including the current state of mind in the Construction Industry as well as the amount of time being put into the new website by the Irish committee it was decided to keep the Christmas drinks very simple this year. We met up in the Waterloo in Baggot Street and had a few drinks to end another good year of NAWIC in Ireland. Given the huge financial committment involved in the new website there was unfortunately no funds to extend to Christmas drinks. A solicitor member who shall remain nameless with a generous publican client did manage to convince him to put a card behind the bar so a good night was nonetheless had by all.

  • Dodder Flood Alleviation Scheme

26 August 2010 We were worried in the summer of 2010 about the lack of iconic construction projects such as we had visited in the summer of 2009. This site visit demonstrated that there are always interesting projects going on which do not perhaps get as much attention as the stadiums or airports but which are nonetheless most interesting. We were brought on a walk by the Dublin City Council Flood Defence Unit and Projects Division and shown all the innovative solutions which have been put in place in Dublin bay to prevent against the types of floods which historically caused severe damage in Dublin. It is most interesting to see the beautiful walkways created along the canal which all in fact serve as flood defences. It was a glorious sunny evening in Dublin which helped make this a most enjoyable evening. Our sincere thanks to of DCC for taking us on this walk and for joining us in Slatterys for the pints afterwards.

Our thanks and appreciation to Robert McKernan of McKernan Training Solutions for a most interesting interactive workshop focusing on our negotiation skills and how these are determined by the type of personality we are born with. Most of us proved to be "yellow" or "green" personalities but there were a couple of "reds", in particular one quantity surveyor who shall remain nameless, but who may prove tricky to agree a bill with when those "red" traits are let out. Our thanks also to Mason Hayes + Curran for the wine and finger food reception which followed.

For many of us it is the only opportunity we will ever have to stand in the middle of the pitch or in a corporate box. The steel lovers in particular were fascinated with the construction of this magnificent structure. The visit was oversubscribed yet again. Afterwards Eversheds O'Donnell Sweeney hosted us to drinks and finger food in the D4 hotel and once again a most enjoyable night was had by all.
