Major milestone reahed on The Shard

14 October 2011

Major milestone reached on The Shard, London

The Shard reached a major project milestone last week when the changeover from the
temporary to the permanent electrical supply was carried out. This will allow the pace
of commissioning to accelerate ahead of the planned completion date of the shell-andcore
installation in May 2012. The shell-and-core services to the lower half of the
building (comprising offices and a hotel) are largely complete, and attention is now
focused on the completion of the residential apartments and public viewing galleries at
the top.

The Shard is supplied by two dedicated 20kV high voltage cables, originating from a
new 20kV switchboard at another Arup project, Bankside substation. The recent
refurbishment and replant of Bankside substation includes what is thought to be the first
waste-heat reclaim system to be designed and installed at any major UK substation, and
generates enough zero-carbon heat for the whole of the Tate Modern building.
