The Infrastructure and Capital Investment Programme 2012 - 2017
17 November 2011
The government launched the eagerly awaited Infrastructure and Capital Investment Programme on 10 November 2011.
The Government will spend a total of €17 billion over the next 5 years, €4 billion of which will be spent in 2012 (a cut of €755 million). Unsurprisingly Health, Education and job creation infrastructure projects will be the main beneficiaries.
Projects which have been deferred include Metro North, the Dart underground, Thornton Hall prison and Grangegorman DIT Single Campus Project. The BXD project to link the two Luas lines and extend the service to Broombridge will proceed.
Health projects which will go ahead include the National Radiation and Oncology Project, the Central Mental Hospital and the National Childrens Hospital.
Given that 70,000 extra students are expected to enter the education system in the next five years school building is a priority. There are plans for 20 new primary and 20 new secondary schools as well as 180 extensions and refurbshments to existing schools.
Water will be the recipient of €1.6 billion which will be spent on improvements and new infrastructure.
Roadworks over the next five years will be confined to maintenance with no new projects on the horizon.
