Recent Changes to Part L of the UK Building Regulations

25 February 2011

The updated Part L Building Regulations will have a major impact on the building services sector. These changes will prove to be the toughest yet, as part of the government's plan for lower carbon buildings.

The changes to Part L aim to:

  • Reduce ambiguity between the "Requirements" and "Guidance"
  • Improve compliance and close the "Performance gap", to ensure that buildings achieve in practice what they set out to do in theory
  • Close loopholes which hamper the government's efforts to drive energy efficiency in buildings
  • Ensure savings of 25% in CO2 levels per year compared to 2006 levels
